Injuries derived from military training in 6th level cadets of the José María Córdova military school
Lesiones derivadas del entrenamiento militar en los cadetes de 6° nivel de la escuela militar José maría Córdova
Main Article Content
Introduction: in the majority of military populations in Colombia, the causes of musculoskeletal injuries are unknown; it has been reported in other studies worldwide that these occur mostly as a result of military training.
Objective: to characterize the mechanism of injury, type of injury and the prevalence of injuries derived from military physical training at the José María Córdova Military School (ESMIC) in sixth-level students (ensign).
Materials and methods: mixed study, in the quantitative phase a survey was carried out with a random sampling of 39 ensigns with 95% CI; As a qualitative part, 5 semi-structured interviews were carried out.
Results: it was found that one of the most prevalent injuries is ankle sprains (12.8%); The causes for which a cadet may suffer an injury are diverse, but the main causes were "flipping", a blow or fall, and equipment or clothing. Likewise, it was found that subjects with one injury are more likely to have a second injury. In the results of the qualitative phase, it is evident that one of the causes of injury is not warming up and stretching before and after military physical exercise; this leads to a greater number of injuries to the lower limbs.
Conclusions: knowledge of the presence of injuries in this population group reveals the little knowledge there is of their training processes and opens the door to generate research in military physical training as well as injury prevention.
