Abstract

Introduction: the training and stay of athletes at altitude constitutes the natural and legal means of increasing the supply of tissue oxygen, resistance and consequently sports performance. In the last two decades, several studies express an increase in erythropoietin (EPO) values as an effect of this.
Objective: to compare the results of endogenous serum EPO levels in two groups of competitive level cyclists at different training altitudes above sea level.
Materials and methods: descriptive, transversal, with a population of 20 competitive level cyclists, 10 who live and train at low altitude (Villavicencio) and 10 at medium altitude (Tunja). After informed consent, they were subjected to phlebotomy once. The samples were processed with a sandwich micro ELISA technique for EPO.
Results: statistically the serum concentrations of EPO at the two heights presented a symmetrical distribution, it was processed with the Shapiro-Wil test, the EPO variable presenting a non-normal distribution, for which non-parametric U Man Whitney measurement was applied, with significance of the 5%, there was no statistical evidence (p=0.73) to affirm that the average EPO levels are different between the two training groups.
Conclusions: the physiological behavior of serum EPO levels in native athletes of moderate altitude does not always increase, given the balance between the formation and destruction of erythrocytes. As well as the adaptation, acclimatization and usual training processes in athletes with preparation programs at different altitudes.
