Conocimientos y prácticas sobre la tuberculosis pulmonar de estudiantes de la universidad del Tolima y profesionales de la salud de una IPS pública de Ibagué Colombia
Main Article Content
Introduction: Infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis affects one third of the world's population, and is considered a global emergency. Research points to an increased risk among health professionals and students. The objective is to describe the knowledge about pulmonary tuberculosis of students in their last semester of medicine at the University of Tolima and health professionals in a public IPS in the city of Ibagué.
Method: A qualitative, descriptive and interpretive study, focused ethnography type, was proposed. The population was made up of 3 health professionals and 11 students in their last semester of medicine. The information was collected through a self-designed interview that contained questions about the etiology and transmission of tuberculosis, prevention and control strategies, biosafety and treatment, and effectiveness of DOTS/TAES.
Results: Health personnel and medical students have satisfactory knowledge about pulmonary tuberculosis and its management according to established control standards. However, some risk practices related to compliance with biosafety measures and pharmacological prescription were identified. This study demonstrated the strength related to tuberculosis knowledge and practices among students and health professionals on the etiology, preventive measures, diagnosis and transmission of pulmonary tuberculosis.
Conclusions: It is necessary to direct efforts from training to implement biosafety measures and strengthen knowledge about pharmacological treatment among new students.
