Effect of a therapeutic exercise program on postural control in elderly people with instability
Efecto de un programa de ejercicios terapéuticos sobre el control postural en ancianos con inestabilidad
Main Article Content
Postural control involves the control of body positions in space and the ability to maintain an appropriate relationship between body segments with respect to space and the task. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a therapeutic exercise program that involves the axial axis in functional activities on the components of postural control in older adults who report instability. In this
The research involved 39 people over 65 years of age who reported instability, who were randomly assigned to receive a physiotherapeutic intervention, 19 for the experimental group and 17 for the control, the first received a treatment focused on functional activities that involve the axial component and the second a conventional exercise program, both with an intensity of 6 weeks duration three times
per week for a total of 18 sessions. The 39 people underwent a pre- and post-intervention evaluation. After the application of the protocol, the experimental group showed significant changes in 5 of the 6 components of postural control evaluated and intervened with a (P < 0.05) compared to the control group where the changes were not significant (P > 0.05). Cognitive function showed significant changes for both groups. In conclusion, in patients with instability in the experimental group, significant changes were generated in the variables of gait speed, balance during walking, functional range, cognitive function, balance, and gait characteristics.
