Abstract

Introduction: In recent years, Vagus Nerve Electrostimulation (VNS) has shown positive results in the care of patients with depression, epilepsy and migraine. Currently the effects of VNS are being investigated in other pathologies such as stroke, fibromyalgia syndrome and for the treatment of chronic pain. Objective: The purpose of this descriptive review is to provide the physical therapist with an update on necessary and evolving concepts of electrostimulation of the vagus nerve, revealing the potential applications for the physical therapy profession. Methodology: This descriptive review article was carried out through a search of the scientific literature available in databases such as Google Scholar, Scielo, Dialnet Plus, ScienceDiret, and PubMed, of which a total of 8 were selected for stroke. articles, 2 articles for fibromyalgia and 2 articles for chronic pain. Discussion: This article describes the potentialities that the use of VNS has for the physiotherapist for the treatment of fibromyalgia syndrome and chronic pain, in addition to the rehabilitation of the functional sequelae of post-stroke patients. Conclusions: VNS is channeled to make a valid and safe therapeutic option for the treatment and rehabilitation of different pathologies that generally affect the nervous system, pathologies that have a great impact on the quality of life of patients, making VNS one of potential therapeutic alternatives for these patients.
