Role of physiotherapy in palliative care
Rol de la fisioterapia en los cuidados paliativos
Main Article Content
Introduction:Palliative care is an approach carried out by a multidisciplinary team to improve the quality of life of patients with terminal illness and their families. On the other hand, physiotherapy favors the reduction of possible disabilities caused by the disease or its treatments.
Objective:To determine the role of physiotherapy in palliative care.
Materials and methods:Systematic review with descriptive analysis and retrospective chronology. Information was gathered about the population, intervention and control groups, type of pathology, intervention, period and frequency of intervention and results.
Results:The physiotherapy team focuses mainly on an exercise program in which there is no dosage on the type, frequency, intensity and duration of the exercises that should be administered to patients, nor at what stage of the disease should be administered and in what way, the dosage will be individual and depending on the stage of the disease. The studies were identified and selected by means of the recommendations of the PRISMA Declaration and the Cochrane Collaboration, in addition, the methodological quality of the studies included in the review was evaluated through the PEDro Scale.
Conclusion:The main role of the physiotherapist is the maintenance of the active life until death, encouraging the patient body activity and reducing the symptoms caused by the disease.
