Pulmonary rehabilitation in patients with diffuse interstitial lung disease
Rehabilitación pulmonar en pacientes con enfermedad pulmonar intersticial difusa Case study
Main Article Content
Introduction: Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a multidisciplinary treatment alternative for patients with Diffuse Interstitial Lung Disease (DILD). The objective is to describe the effect of a pulmonary rehabilitation program from the clinical conditions, functional capacity and health-related quality of life characteristics of patients with ILD.
Method: Case study in three patients with different causes of the disease. An evaluation was carried out at the beginning and at the end, recording sociodemographic variables, spirometry, dyspnea, distance in the six-minute walk test and quality of life. 8 weeks of training were performed three times a week of treadmill aerobic exercise, starting at 80% of the estimated peak oxygen consumption, increasing to 90% at 4 weeks. Individual and group educational meetings were also included.
Results: Smoking was a risk factor present in one of the cases who belonged to a patient with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, in the population the male sex was more frequent; Regarding the 6-minute walk test, an improvement between 21 – 62 meters was found in the distance traveled; All three cases decreased dyspnea assessed with the Medical Research Council dyspnea scale and health-related quality of life had clinically significant changes in the scores of the CRQ-SAS questionnaire at the end of the pulmonary rehabilitation program.
Conclusions: The 6-minute walk test, MRC dyspnea, and health-related quality of life are key tools to individually assess aerobic capacity limitations and participation restrictions in patients with ILD.
