Patellar Tendinopathy in Basketball
Tendinopatía Patelar en Baloncesto Interdisciplinary and physiotherapeutic strategies to optimize performance and recovery
Main Article Content
Patellar tendinopathy represents a significant clinical challenge in basketball players, impacting their performance and prolonging recovery times. This narrative review synthesizes the current evidence on its management, highlighting the importance of an interdisciplinary approach combining physiotherapeutic strategies, innovative therapies, and biomechanical and nutritional considerations. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and SPORTDiscus was conducted using key terms related to patellar tendinopathy, basketball, physiotherapy and orthobiological therapies. Selected studies were critically appraised, extracting data on therapeutic interventions, clinical outcomes and assessment tools. The results indicate that conservative therapies, such as eccentric exercises, remain fundamental, while isometric and isotonic contractions offer viable options for pain relief and tendon adaptation, and innovative therapies, such as sclerotherapy, prolotherapy and platelet-rich plasma show potential, but require validation through controlled clinical trials. In addition, the integration of biomechanical and nutritional aspects is crucial to optimize recovery and prevent recurrences. It is concluded that an interdisciplinary approach is essential for the effective management of patellar tendinopathy in basketball players and well-designed clinical trials are recommended to validate innovative therapies, developing personalized treatment protocols.
