Motor control and gait disturbances in Parkinson’s disease
Control motor y alteraciones de la marcha en la Enfermedad de Parkinson
Main Article Content
Introduction: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a
neurodegenerative disorder associated with the
death of dopamine-producing cells in the striatum,
which causes rigidity, is progressive, chronic and
irreversible, with the presence of motor and nonmotor
symptoms. Objective: To carry out a literature
review related to motor control and gait alterations
in people over 65 years of age with PD and the
different treatment alternatives. Methodology:
Literature review based on systematic review
guideline recommendations for scoping reviews.
The search was performed in databases such as
Medline/pubmed and the Physiotherapy Evidence
Database PEDro, limiting the search to articles in
English published in the last five years. Results: 934
records were identified, of which 21 were included
that met the eligibility criteria that presented the
main alterations of motor control and gait grouped
into changes in posture, bradykinesia, muscle
weakness and a shorter stride. Conclusions: Gait in
PD is characterized by alterations in balance and
postural control, presenting common signs such
as reduced arm swing amplitude, stride length and
dragging steps. It was identified that when performing
cognitive training with dual tasks, double support
time decreased, speed and stride length improved.
Auditory and visual signals, in addition to enriched
environments, are effective in the treatment focused
on motor learning of gait
