Cardiac rehabilitation before and after gastric bypass surgery

Abstract

A 53-year-old woman with a medical diagnosis of morbid obesity with cardiovascular risk factors, who is referred to the cardiac rehabilitation service for physical conditioning before and after gastric bypass surgery. The patient underwent seventy (70) cardiac rehabilitation sessions throughout her entire process, which included supervised physical activity, respiratory muscle training, education and control of cardiovascular risk factors. The surgical procedure was carried out without complications; time
hospitalization was five days. At the end of the cardiac rehabilitation program, there is evidence of improvement in functional capacity, given by an increase in the distance walked in the six-minute test of 308 feet and a better chronotropic and pressor response to physical effort. Cardiac rehabilitation is recommended throughout the entire process of gastric bypass surgery, in order to improve functional capacity, cardiopulmonary response to physical exercise, and weight loss in a safe way.
