The hermeneutics as an Integrative Thinking in Public Health Decision-Making.

La hermenéutica como pensamiento integrador en la toma de decisiones en salud pública

Abstract

This article addresses the limitations of scientific
positivism in the role of healthcare professionals,
particularly physiotherapists, in public health
activities. Method: Through a qualitative and
interpretative methodology that included the review
and analysis of grey literature, given the scarcity of
information on this topic, notable deficiencies in
the positivist approach were identified, such as its
tendency to be reductionist, focus on short-term
outcomes, and inadequately consider the socioeconomic,
cultural, and behavioral aspects that
influence public health. Results: To overcome these
limitations, the adoption of a hermeneutical approach
is proposed, which integrates the interpretation of
meanings and cultural and social contexts into the
decision-making process of healthcare professionals.
This hermeneutical approach promotes longterm
prevention and an understanding of human
behavior in the context of public health, thus
enabling the implementation of more effective,
culturally appropriate, and human rights-respectful
interventions. Conclusion: By recognizing the
importance of this perspective in public health
practice and research, progress is made toward
providing quality care that considers the diversity
of factors influencing the health and well-being of
communities, contributing to a more equitable and
sustainable public health.
